Unattached kinetochores occur in the course of correction of incorrectly attached chromosomes. Although the mitotic checkpoint cannot directly distinguish normal from erroneous kinetochore attachments, correction of the latter can result in the production of an unattached kinetochore detected by the checkpoint.
